If you’ve been to one wedding, you’ve seen it all. From the flowers and the candles to the dress and the music, the typical wedding can be as predictable and generic as your Uncle John’s dance moves. For your wedding to stand out, you need to involve your guests in the sentiment and process of the day. It’s not the cake or the great food that will be remembered, but all the little details that will make your wedding as unique and memorable for your guests as it will be for you. These are some on how to personalize your day will make it the event that will be talked about for years to come:

Wellcome your guests:

Write a welcome note for your out-of-town guests on postcards from the city your wedding takes place. It’s a nice personal touch that shows tremendous thought as well as a keepsake that can be saved with photos of the wedding.

About the wedding:

Include an “About the Wedding Party” section in your programs or on the reception tables for your guests to learn more about the members of your bridal party. Not everyone will know that you and your Maid of Honor have been best friends since preschool.

Place tissues or personalized embroidered handkerchiefs in the rows where family will be seated for their “tears of joy”.

Don’t forget your parents:

Write a letter to your mom and dad and have it waiting for them at their seat during the ceremony. It could be about anything: a thank you, how you hope your marriage turns out like theirs, your gratitude everything they have done for you, etc. They will be so touched and honored that you took the time to arrange for this and you’ll have them in tears before you begin to walk down the aisle!

Bouquet:

Have each bridesmaid carry a bouquet made entirely of their favorite flower. Your bouquet will be a combination of all of their flowers.

Dress:

Dress your flowergirl in a bright color rather than a replica of your dress so that the dress can be worn again.

Wedding vows:

Read your vows to candlelight. All your guests will receive a candle on their way into the ceremony. When it comes time for the vows, have your ushers or groomsmen go around and light the candle at the end of the row and let them “pass the flame”. It’s a nice romantic touch to a very sentimental and powerful moment.

The surprise:

Serve your cocktails from a “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” menu. Take recommendations from special people involved in the wedding for their favorite old/classic drink, a new/modern drink, a favorite borrowed unique drink recipe and a blue cocktail. It’s a festive way to get the party started!

Place cards:

Write special love quotes on the inside of everyone’s place cards.

The Guest book:

Have guests sign a tablecloth or guest book platter to be used at special dinners in the future in lieu of a guestbook.You can also think about a Tree for a wedding wish. So the guest will be surprised to find a different way to express their feelings.

The music:

Be sure to have your parents and married siblings first dances played at the reception- and make sure the DJ or band recognizes them when its played!

The kids:

Be sure to have a kid oriented table. Lay down block paper for them to draw on, have them make you cards, serve hot dogs, chicken fingers, ice cream sundaes. Perhaps even have a side room for them with Disney movies playing or a magician for entertainment. Your guests will love you for getting the kids out of their hair for the night!

Remember that this wedding is about celebrating your love and inviting your family and friends to see a glimpse of who you are. Don’t be afraid to do things a little differently… your guests will appreciate and remember your day all the more for it!

Six- Nine Months before the Wedding

• Announce your engagement.
• Select a date for your wedding.
• Set a financial range and budget, as well as costs-sharing.
• Picture and formalize the type of wedding theme you want
• Organize and formalize the wedding location, time of day, number of guests.
• Consider hiring a professional wedding consultant.
• Develop a record-keeping system for payments made.
• Amalgamate the guest lists for the family of the bride, groom, the bride’s family, groom’s family.
• Finalize and select the ceremony site.
• Decide if you want children among your guests.
• Select and reserve your officiant.
• Select and reserve the receptions site.
• Choose and order your headpiece and bridal gown.
• Contact the local newspaper with the engagement notice and photograph.
• Use a ‘day-timer’, calendar or wedding software to mark down the dates and times for: the bridal showers, parties and other celebrations or luncheons
• Screen and hire a wedding photographer for your event.
• For a home and garden theme ceremony or reception, consider decorators or home improvement.
• Choose the attire – dresses, shoes and accessories for attendants
• Choose your flower girl and ring bearer.
• Screen and book musicians or DJ for the reception
• Choose and book videographer.
• Arrange for your caterer.
• Contact, screen and book wedding florist.
• Schedule fittings and delivery dates for yourself and attendants.

Four - Six Months before the Wedding

• complete and finalize guest list.
• consider wedding counseling services with your officiant that are available (or required) for your church or temple.
• begin shopping for wedding gifts for each other.
• reserve rental items needed for ceremony and reception.
• choose and order your wedding invitations and stationary - wedding programs, seating cards, thank you notes.
• hire invitations designer, calligrapher, or address invitations.
• decide on and finalize a date, time and location of rehearsal dinner.
• start to break in shoes
• find and arrange accommodations for out-of-town guests.
• start planning your honeymoon.
• choose and reserve gift attendant, valet parking and other miscellaneous services
• shop for shoes and accessories.
• register for gifts.

Two - Four Months before the Wedding

• Save and record RSVP’s and gifts received
• Upon receipt of gifts send thank-you notes.
• Mail invitations. Include accommodations choices and a map to assist guests in finding the wedding ceremony and reception sites.
• Select bakery / baker and order cake and (optional) topper.
• Order flowers.
• Contact and book transportation for wedding day.
• Order decorations (possibly according to wedding theme).
• Search for and shop your wedding rings.
• Check marriage license requirements.

Six - Eight Weeks before the Wedding

• Determine hair style and makeup.
• Create and follow schedule for makeup, hair and beauty, accessories and nails for the day before the wedding.
• Finish shopping for wedding day accessories - ring pillow, glasses for wedding toasts, guestbook and any last-minute gifts.

A week before the wedding:

• Inform caterer of final guest count.
• Pick up wedding attire and make sure everything fits
• Gather everything needed for rehearsal and wedding day and liaise with coordinator
• Meet with coordinator to contact service providers
• Confirm accommodations and reservations for honeymoon
• Finish packing your suitcases - don’t forget passport if needed for the honeymoon.
• Pick up tickets and travelers checks.
• Designate someone to bring accessories - flower basket, guest book and pen, ring pillow, toasting glasses, cake cutting knife to the ceremony and reception.
• Provide a detailed schedule of events for the wedding with your wedding party
